Tomcat is an industry leading servlet engine from the Apache Software Foundation and one its most popular open source projects. Because Hyperic HQ is built on Tomcat technology, Hyperic has ensured that HQ provides the most complete Tomcat management capabilities available from any solution on the market. HQ's management for Tomcat provides detailed information about the server as well as every webapp deployed in it. This allows you to gain a level of visibility into the resource consumption of both the server as well as every webapp without requiring instrumentation of your Tomcat or JVM.

Hyperic's SIGAR technology also helps provide you with information on JVM performance which offers measurements of the Tomcat server from the operating system's point of view. HQ's web based portal allows you to build personalized views of monitoring data which compare things like CPU consumption for your Tomcat instance, the response time of every webapp, and the load average of the machine hosting the Tomcat server. HQ also provides real per-request response time monitoring which allows you to look at real performance data for each of your webapps.

HQ's Apache HTTP plugin offers auto-discovery and monitoring of any Apache installation on a host, as well as dynamic discovery of all Virtual Hosts defined in the server's configuration. The monitoring capabilities are performed via a SNMP module which is included in the HQ distribution and allows the HQ agent to collect server and vhost metrics through the localhost interface of the machine. HQ's control capability can perform a variety of on demand or scheduled control actions on the Apache server process. These control operations range from normal start and stop actions to more specialized tasks such as warm restarts, ssl-start and configuration tests.
